Sebastien Riffault - Sancerre Akméniné 2012

Akméniné is a natural wine with a lot of energy. He exudes a fascinating calm. That's how we like Sauvignon Blanc, but it is anything but a classic Sancerre Sauvignion but super exciting!

the wine

That's how we like Sauvignon Blanc, but it is anything but a classic Sancerre Sauvignion but super exciting!

Akméniné is a natural wine with a lot of energy. He exudes a fascinating calm. It is the softest of the Sebastien series, more expansive, with softer acidity. It develops with air over days and remains exciting at all times.

In honor of his Lithuanian wife, Sebastien Riffault has given his wines names in their national language. "Akméniné" means something like "grown on stones". That describes the 30-year-old vines that are rooted on clay and limestone pebbles quite aptly.

Ripe, fruity notes are bundled in an ever-narrowing strand of aromas of elderberries and currants, currant leaves and ripe apricots.

Refined, unvarnished and complex, finely salty on the palate. Great drinking pleasure!

Winemakers
Sébastien Riffault took over the vineyard from his father when he was only 21 years old. He started with a 0.8 hectare vineyard as it was not customary to follow organic or biodynamic practices in the Sancerre region of the Loire Valley. Most of the time, conventional viticulture, "clean", bare rows of vines, is still the standard. In contrast to those like Riffault, who can be recognized from afar and who are planted with colorful flowers and herbs between the vines. Shortly after starting organic viticulture, he turned to biodynamics in 2004 and has been practicing it ever since. He plows with two horses, which he often lends out to neighbors 🙂 The special thing about Sébastien's wines is that he starts harvesting much later than his fellow winegrowers. He wants to present Sauvignon Blanc in its original, pure form - far from the usual. It violates all Sancerre rules: lets the grapes overripe and is attacked by botrytis, a fungus found in sweet wines such as Tokaji Aszú or Sauternes. This gives these naturally fermented juices a distinctive smell that many so-called “specialists” would judge to be faulty. The Riffault wines are indeed unique and have a special character. However, once you get drawn into this world, you may never leave it again! In the basement, too, Sébastien pursues methods with little intervention. No sulphites, no fining or filtration, it even fills by gravity. There's a single crowd-pleaser for his Sauvignon Blancs, Les Quarterons, to which, unlike the trilogy of Skeveldra, Saulétas, and Auksinins (or any other of his picks), he adds a bit of sulfite, focusing on three different soil types. Despite their amber color, they are not classic orange wines. He offers an orange wine, the Auksinis maceration, a deep, tannic version of his original. A funky Pinot Noir rounds off the list with its light earthy and berry tones.
