the wine

Saint Jean Du Barroux - L'Argile stands for the characteristic clayey loam soil of the region. The composition consists of Grenache Noir, Syrah, Carignan and Cinsault.

The 2017 l'Argile makes a dark and very elegant start. And brings a lot more to the table than the very good one Entry-level curvée by Philippe Gimel. The nose is reminiscent of blackberries and sour cherries, earthy notes with clove, Mediterranean herbs, pine, pepper and some leather.
In the glass then BÄM juicy but slim, significantly less sweet than with La Source, but the handwriting of Philippe Gimel is clearly visible. Silky and elegant, the alcohol is barely noticeable and well integrated. Tender tannins and still juicy. A great balance that the l'Argile brings with it.
Like all Philippe Gimel wines, L'Argile is not filtered, which is why it can often contain large amounts of depot. For that reason alone, decanting is worthwhile - it also requires a lot of air to really pick up speed.

Philippe Gimel's heart and soul belongs to his wines and you can taste that very clearly in his wonderful cuvées, which are bursting with power, aromas and spice. They are very reminiscent of great Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines. And that is no coincidence, because after his studies he worked at Château de Beaucastel. Even today, Claude Gouan, none other than the winemaker of this world-famous winery, is his foster father.

Info on expansion:
Composition consists of Grenache Noir, Syrah, Carignan and Cinsault. The yields in this cuvée are also very low at around 20 hectoliters per hectare. Three quarters of the amount is macerated for ten days. The remaining quarter is pressed directly. The expansion takes place in concrete tanks, neutral containers with an enamel coating and a few used barrels.

Winemakers
"..This could well be one of the next hot cult wines from Provence ...", Robert Parker could hardly have paid a nicer compliment to the young, sympathetic winemaker Philippe Gimel. His whole heart and soul belongs to his wines and you can taste that very clearly in his wonderful cuvées, which are bursting with power, aromas and spice. They are very reminiscent of great Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines. And that is no coincidence, because after his studies he worked at Château de Beaucastel. Even today, Claude Gouan, none other than the winemaker of this world-famous winery, is his foster father. He is not only at Philippe's side with words and deeds, but is also involved in the winery. He was the one who advised him to buy the excellent vineyards around Barroux. The complex soil structure and the special climate make his wines unique.
